This week is busy, busy, busy at the Northrup King Building! Ingrid Restemayer Studio will be open for the “First Thursday” monthly art crawl as well as the rest of the weekend for Art Attack!
Art Attack is NKB’s signature autumn art crawl. Studios throughout the buildings will be open, showing over 200 artist's work in one huge and diverse location. Many studios will have invited guest artists on site. 401-B will not only be showing my work, but work by painter, Eric Cornett, who has been sharing the space for the past few months.
Art Attack is a must-do event if you want to get in touch with the local art community. Start your holiday shopping early and feel good about supporting your local artists and craftspeople!

Clements, Koop & Restemayer at BPAC

Burnsville Performing Arts Center is proud to present Follow the Muse, featuring the artwork of K. Daphnae Koop, Marc Clements, and Ingrid Restemayer.
Show runs July 29 – September 3, 2011
The opening reception will be held at the Burnsville Performing Art Center’s beautiful 2,000 square foot art gallery on Friday, July 29, from 6 – 8 pm.
Follow the Muse includes intricate artwork by each of these artists, each inspired by unique sources including carved wood, contemporary tribal tattoos, and the plains of North Dakota. The artists utilize mediums such as repurposed wood and glass, stone, and fiber. The commonality in all of the artwork is that each artist celebrates texture in its various forms.
Mark Clements is a painter who finds himself working in stone – more literally on stone. Clements’ 3-dimensional sculptures leave natural stone shapes untouched. His art is in patterned surface treatment, carved relief that is often gilt. His design inspiration is drawn from antique wallpapers, tribal tattoos and even crop circles. The rocks are then stacked into simple Cairns, one of the oldest forms of artistic expression. Delicate curves and florets are often thought of as gentle, temporary images. Clements manages to permanently incorporate them so perfectly with something as hard, heavy and elemental as stone that his sculptures grace the home or garden as easily as a gallery or museum.
K. Daphnae Koop is a painter who finds inspiration in the richly textured surfaces of her hand-carved wood “canvasses”. Layers of paint, color washes, metal leaf, powders, and varnishes create chapters of a theme or story, written as layers are created through build-up. Each repetitive step -- carving, honing, coloring each plank and block is as meditative as it is physically demanding. In Koop’s latest series of paintings, an element of assemblage has come in with the addition of streams of shattered auto glass. The tiny shards glisten and sparkle, while the painted wood catches light like ripples of water. The glittery attraction of the light refraction qualities betrays the sharp glass edges and heavy wooden form. The inherent paradox of light and weight, the marriage of nonrepresentational surface and solid foundation gives these pieces a presence not found in traditional painting.
Ingrid Restemayer is a fiber artist and printmaker whose mixed media work incorporates traditional hand-embroidery techniques, dyed papers and hand-pulled prints combined through collage. Her continual lines of running stitches were born out of inspiration from the Dakota plains’ frozen horizon where one finds excitement and inquiry in the slightest variation. Her work emulates this peaceful beauty in its monotony and conveys calmness through repetition. Intaglio images act as pseudo-illustrations for a kind of narrative when paired with code-like paragraph shapes formed from Restemayer’s hand-embroidery. In this age of instant electronic anything, sustainable tactics in art creation, things made by the human hand often have the power to promote further human interaction.
The vastly different mediums of carved stone, painted wood and stitched paper are exhibited together in this delicious trifecta of haptic surfaces through labor-intensive art making.
Obsessively honed facades are not the only thing these works have in common. The three artists have worked with and around each other for many years – even sharing studio space together. Their work maintains individuality, yet comes together beautifully for this exhibit.

Fiber Art LIVE

To round out the “Shapeshifters” exhibition at Modified Arts in Phoenix, Arizona, I’ll be creating live and “life size” versions of my found object work at the closing reception this Saturday, February 12th.

The work in the exhibition is based on the changing the symbolism of common, pop-culture items by placing them in an implied alternate context by way of hand-embroidery. The live pieces are aimed at taking the above concept one step further. On the surface the idea is simple. I plan to use a living, breathing person as the ‘found object’ focus item. I sew on/over/around them, like in the still pieces but on a much larger scale.

As technology has become ever more increasingly infused into our daily lives, our culture and values have shifted. Often I am questioned about the time it takes to hand-stitch my art work. (That is, once people discover that I do not use a machine.) And so it is not a surprise that the visual art world has recently fallen in line with this age of everything instant and/or digitally created. In my live work, a person’s context is changed while simultaneously the act of sewing elevates the idea of an artistic capture of a pose or a moment taking place over time. The pieces also speak to the temporary nature of a moment in time in the literal sense that the resulting work will be destroyed when the subject is (literally) cut from his/her context.

On Thursday, August 6th, guest artist, Layl McDill will be doing polymer clay technique demonstrations throughout the evening.
Layl’s polymer clay sculptures and millefiore canes (called “Silly Millies”) are well known by the polymer clay community. Her work has been featured several times in PolymerCAFE’ magazine, and sculptures have been in several books about polymer clay. Her whimsical creations can be seen at galleries and consignment shops around the country.
Come see Layl’s work along side some new found object pieces I’m showing.

"Animals: Them & Us" On Tour in ND

Through the North Dakota Museum of Art's Rural Arts Initiative, "Animals: Them and Us" is touring North Dakota. The exhibition just closed in Ashley, ND, where 300 students and community members saw it. Currently, the exhibition is on display at the Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton, ND. The exhibition will be up until May 31. This is a multi-media exhibition by over 20 regional, national and international artists. My contribution to this traveling exhibition is this quirky little chicken (pictured) titled, "Scaredycat".

Once again this year, I’m honored to have work included in the North Dakota Museum of Art’s Annual Benefit Dinner & Silent Auction. This year’s festivities take place on Saturday, February 7th. This organization is a wonderful and worthwhile art oasis in North Dakota and I’m happy to help support it. They do a fantastic job of bringing in contemporary art from all over the world and balancing that with showcasing important work from the region. Both veins exposing the community to notable art work they might not otherwise have access to. Jerome Fiber Artists Project Grant Awards Announced

"The Textile Center is pleased to announce the recipients of the first ever Jerome Fiber Artists Project Grants.We received 73 applications from emerging artists in Minnesota for three $5,000 grants, which were awarded in December 2008. Jurors Jane Dunnewold, Jan Myers-Newbury and Laurie Schafer met in November to review the applications and have chosen Ingrid Restemayer, Heidi Henderson and Maggie Dayton to receive the grants. Work resulting from these projects will be the focus of a Textile Center Joan Mondale Gallery exhibit in August 2009. Congratulations to Ingrid, Heidi and Maggie!"

The Fiber of the Matter (la Fibre del Asunto) opened this past weekend at The Icehouse in Phoenix, Arizona. This is an exhibition of 9 fiber artists, curated by contributing artist, Christy Puetz. The show consists almost entirely of installation work -- everything from a field of felt poppies suspended in delicate white sand to an eerily lit elevator shaft filled with branches that seem to have sprouted hairballs. My personal favorites include Puetz's intricately detailed beaded chickens and a giant braid. The chickens are sparkly and lovely with their brightly colored beaded surfaces and color-coded bases, yet which upon further examination reveal the story of how communicable diseases are spread. (Thought provoking!) A braid sounds simple enough, but this new take on Rapunzel was made from plastic tubes stuffed with newspapers and print ads. It was of monumental scale, spiraling an entire room, running up a 2-story wall, out the open cieling and falling massively yet gracefully down the front of the building. I myself unfurled about 27 feet of a piece in progress that, when complete will have 40 feet of paper surface entirely covered with tiny running stitches.

If you are in the Phoenix area, this show is a must-see. (Actually, more of a must-experience.) The Icehouse is open by appointment only, but the closing reception is scheduled for Friday, November 21, 6-10pm.

Art Attack is an annual open studio and gallery crawl at the Northrup King Building, in the heart of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. The weekend-long event features hundreds of artists working in ceramics, glass, jewelry, mixed media, mosaics, painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, wood, textiles, and more.

I have tons of new work in studio this year as well as work by my good friend, Josh Blanc of Clay Squared to Infinity. Josh will be showcasing his signature "cosmic" handmade tile art along side my mixed media collage work.

In Deceit by Mirage Tara Costello’s plays in atmosphere and emotion contrast with Ingrid Restemayer’s patterned premeditation. Yet the show is balanced and complimentary in that both these artists’ recent works deal with the implication of space through shape.

The latest from abstract painter, Tara Costello concentrates on exploring the contrast between control and providence. Texture and reactions between the materials she uses are as important as the resulting image. Her more atmospheric paintings reflect emotional experiences rather than specific places or times. Whereas her more controlled pieces express the raw physicality of mark-making. Yet both were inspired by the beauty of the unexpected.

Printmaker and fiber artist, Ingrid Restemayer continues her habit of mixing mediums but now with a new, greater emphasis on collage – layering dark, hand-dyed papers. A new dimension appears in her work where delicate printed images appear to float between and out from under mottled, inked papers. The papers themselves appear velvety in their blackness. The compositions are, quite literally, tied together with thread. Repetitive hand-stitching adds to the meditative quality of this work.

Pieces in this show work toward the abstraction of shape. At times the essence of a land or waterscape appears, exploring the suspension of time and the beautiful instability that it holds. Atmospheres created solely of color are paired with pieces where dark blacks resonate against bright whites, punctuated by harsh color or gentle printed images.

Costello’s style of painting with trowels and the spontaneous compulsiveness therein presents the fragility of current state. While Restemayer’s collaged layering of paper and image seems meditative but displays a finality marked by her hand-stitched thread codices.

Rosalux Gallery is funded and managed by its 24 artist members. Consumers buy direct from the artist who creates the work. Rosalux is a vibrant and growing community of Twin Cities artists working together to help build not only each others' careers, but also the Twin Cities' art community.

Another "First Thursday in the Arts District" is quickly approaching. This is the time I consider to be my 'regular hours' as the studio is open 5-9pm on the first Thursday of every month for NE's monthly, mini art crawl. Bloomingdale's may be one of the last places you'd expect to find original art by local artists, right? Well, in the Mall of America location Visual Manager, Deb Wink has cleared a spot and developed a program for just such a thing. For almost a year now, Bloomingdale's has played host to a variety of work by locals like me. Shows change out monthly on a highly visible wall between Young Men's and Women's Accessories departments. My work can be seen there now through August 26th, 2008.

"Remembering Dakota" through August 10, 2008

My work has been included in an exhibition at the North Dakota Museum of Art called, "Remembering Dakota". The museum is showing four of my white-on-white, found object pieces -- all inspired by the North Dakota landscape and weather. The show is heavy on photography, but from all different points of view and balanced by some striking 2D and installation pieces in other mediums. There are eerily gorgeous shots of missile sites by Paul Shambroom and Lynn Davis but also an entire wall of wax antlers by Marlene Alt -- quite the variety of views of my home state.

If you are in the neighborhood of Grand Forks, North Dakota this summer, it's worth stopping by the museum to take a look.

Art-A-Whirl, May 16-18, 2008

In case you don't already know, Art-A-Whirl is the BIG Northeast Minneapolis open studio and gallery tour (a.k.a. "art crawl").

For these 3 days in May, practically the whole of Northeast opens its doors for you to come and see what's cookin'. There will be more than 400 artist studios, galleries and alternative art spaces open for you to peruse this year.

My studio in the Northrup King Building (the largest and best populated studio building in the area) will of course be open all 3 days of the event. I've kept up a very full exhibition schedule for the past 2 years, so the studio is packed with recent work. There are a number of mixed media collage pieces available, featuring my signature koi fish etchings on handmade paper -- in a variety of size, color and price point. Come see for yourself. Objects of Affection: A tribute to all things made, bought, sold and then stolen or lost, but not thrown away including a prosthetic leg, some plastic drink monkeys, a roast beef sandwich, a bucket of cleaning supplies, a Remington microscreen electric razor, Sorry game tokens, some combat boots, a traveling toilet seat, an army of toy robots, cocktail parasols in every possible color, a hand bag, sandwich swords, a slice of grape fruit, a cup of pencils, a robotic arm, pet toys, a TV dinner, a wheelchair for your grandma's dead dog, a decoy hand grenade to practice your throwing skills, Origami shirts made from Monopoly money, Milagros, the lyrics to a song that a friend wrote but no one will ever hear, a propaganda pin featuring Chairman Mao, a couple of tiny plastic battleships whose board game was sold at a rummage sale, a little plastic pickle, glass vials of seed beads, a broken glass vial whose beads were lost decades ago, foreign coins, the Monopoly car piece, the little plastic bones from that Operation game, a real chicken foot, and that motor scooter your wife made you sell when you got married.

Daniel Buettner’s incredible drawing skill and his quirky knack for random association come together in his current body of work. His acrylic paintings are seriously detailed yet humorously composed. On the flip side, Ingrid Restemayer displays a mixture of found-objects with fiberart and embroidery techniques. Objects rescued from the junk drawer become key players in each small, stitched composition.
