“Delicate Beasts” Goes South for the Winter

The latest collaboration between Ingrid Restemayer and Christy Puetz, "Delicate Beasts" opens in Phoenix, AZ on Friday, January 16, 2015.
Christy Puetz and Ingrid Restemayer studied Fiberarts together at the University of North Dakota in the 1990’s. They have a history of over 20 years collaborating & exhibiting together. Dedicated to the use of methods and materials traditionally associated with craft, they explore the boundaries and reconceive how craft materials are seen in the fine art world.
The last time these two exhibited together at Modified Art was in 2011 with “Shapeshifters.” The Phoenix New Times’ Kathleen Vanesian had this to say about that coupling of the works of Puetz and Restemayer: “Modified's exhibition, well balanced and thematically seductive, is a great example of how artists can work collaboratively, while maintaining their distinct aesthetic identities, to produce a cohesive result.” (full article here: http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2011-01-27/culture/modified-arts-alters-perceptions-with-shapeshifters-by-ingrid-restemaryer-and-christy-puetz/ )

Perpetual Detail at Hennepin Gallery

September 11 – November 21, 2014
Reception with the artists: Thursday, October 23, 5 – 7 pm • refreshments from 6 – 7

This exquisite exhibition curated by The Textile Center features the work of fiber artists, Ann Hall Richards and Ingrid Restemayer. Hall Richards’ handmade paper panels and sewn silk and thread, combined with collected organic plant materials, challenge the viewer to consider the value of such materials as artistic expression. Restemayer’s work conveys a reflective calmness through repetition. There is storytelling in her use of intaglio images, creating a narrative when paired with Morse code-like shapes formed through her hand-embroidery. Both artists’ creative processes are meditative and labor intensive, and the resulting works reveal dedication and mindfulness. They share a recurring theme of simplicity, ritual, tradition, and the environment.
Hennepin Gallery is located in the Hennepin County Government Center, A-level, 300 South Sixth Street, Minneapolis. Adjacent to the Government Center Station on the Blue and Green LRT lines. Underground garage parking: $5.50 for 2 hours; enter on 3rd Ave South.
Perpetual Detail is on display through November 21. Hennepin Gallery is open Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 6 pm, and is free and open to the public. Hennepin Gallery is a project of Hennepin County Public Affairs.

"Delicate Beasts" Opens In Minneapolis

The latest collaboration between Ingrid Restemayer and Christy Puetz, "Delicate Beasts" opens in Minneapolis on Thursday, September 4, 2014.  The Northrup King Arts Building's 3rd Floor Gallery will host the show, 5-9pm.  (link to directions below)

Christy Puetz’s recent sculptures are beautifully grotesque little creatures. Holding poses that seem frozen in time, each piece is covered with combinations of glass beads, felted wool, dried paint slabs, silk cocoons and other found elements. The materials and exaggerated body parts cause the animals to appear in a state of transformation, or shedding. Because of the “true to life” scale and the colorful, delicately beaded surfaces viewers are drawn in for a closer look.

Ingrid Restemayer’s latest works include gentle etchings of beastly animals like buffalo, elephants and octopi collaged and hand-embroidered. The etchings themselves are intimate studies of individual animals’ expressions and organic movements captured in a still, illustrated moment of individual personality. The images are small. Their size dictated by the etched substrate – discarded retail gift cards. Pairing the tiny portraits with spans of running stitches or French knots also brings each one of these studies to a place of gentle meditation.

In this is the age of instant electronic communication, the age of getting anything instantly via internet downloads to your phone, sustainable tactics in art creation, things made by the human hand often have the power to promote further human interaction. This work is a reminder to society that non-mechanized art and imagery is still achievable and still experiential.

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 4, 5-9pm
Collectors Event: Saturday, September 6, 5-9pm
Show runs through September 27, 2014, hours by appointment

Art-A-Whirl 2014

Art-A-Whirl is the country's largest open studio tour. During the event’s three day run, the whole of Northeast Minneapolis opens its doors to the public. It’s a great opportunity to meet artists in their work spaces and purchase work directly from the creative source.

Once again this year, I’ve got a ton of new work on display.  Stop by Ingrid Restemayer Studio in the Northrup King Building, 1500 Jackson St. NE, studio 401-b -- enter from Van Buren Street for quickest access to my place. You’ll have to brave the 4 flights of stairs, but it’s worth it to start at the top and work your way down in this massive building.

Nearly all of the artists that work here open their studios, the galleries have extended hours and feature shows, restaurants and bars have specials for art-viewing visitors.  In my studio building alone, the (Northrup King Building) there will be work by more than 200 artists to see. Every year is a different experience and vibe.

The greatest concentration of fabulous things lies in and around the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. Click to download the 2014 Art-A-Whirl map.  (NKB is on p.2, quadrant J8)
